After last years peak-pirating season in The Gulf of Aden has been a strengthening of warships off the coast of Somalia. This tactic to reduce pirating worked for a while but the pirates have become smarter and it has created a worse situation.
The pirates cannot work right along the coast so that have expanded their horizons. These Samoan pirates used AK-47’s and grenade launchers to take over 77 crewmen 1,200 miles from shore. This was a record heist with the crew and the distance from shore. They are going farther and farther from their homeland to escape the warships and hijack vessels. There are 15 vessels and 326 sailors currently being held, very close to last year’s numbers.
The warships have done nothing but secure the coast of Somalia and forced the pirates into waters that were once safe. They have moved out deep into the Indian Ocean making many merchants nervous.
I believe that the navy’s warships are dealing with the pirates in the wrong manor. They could use a more tactical plan to catch the pirates along the coast. I would try dressing a warship up like a merchant ship and baiting the bad guys in. When they are close enough and show weapons, open fire and kill them all. The navies protecting the coast have really screwed themselves and by scaring the pirates off. They are now dispersed over a much larger area and will be near impossible to catch.
If trade routes are no longer safe many merchants businesses will be crippled. Navies need to devise a plan to stop the pirating as soon as possible to save many lives and business.
This was a really interesting topic to blog about blogtastic. Most people don't know that there are modern day pirates that take over merchant ships and sell and barter off all of the goods for profit.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever encountered one of these Jack Sparrow wannabes, I would grab my sword and kill them like William Turner does on the reg.
Whenever you feel a change in the wind, look out for the Black Pearl and the pirates aboard. I mean, you would think that our modern naval warships would be advanced enough to catch the Pearl, but apparently not because piracy still exists.
Killing all of the modern pirates isn't necessarily the best idea, but imprisoning them for their crimes is a more justifiable and necessary punishment to keep the seven seas safe.
This is a message to Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbosa: Get out of our ocean!
