For years people have been going to church and lighting a candle for their saint. However, what are we to do when we do not have access to our church and want to say a prayer and light our candle like always. Well, a solution has finally been made. The cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was the first church to install monitors so that patrons can light a personal digital candle from anywhere in the world. Church’s from all around are following the lead and installing monitors among the congregation. Two dollar credit card donations can light a digital candle on a monitor in the church of your choice on a website MiVela.com, translated to “my candle.”
This is a very nice invention for frequent travelers who cannot always attend church but have prayers for others. The church also has the opportunity to make money from the credit card donations on the Internet. However, the introduction of technology in the church has a potential backfire. Why go to church when you can remotely light a digital candle from your own home? People will no longer fee the need to attend services if they can light a candle and say a prayer at their house.
Two financial problems arise from this new technological advancement for a church. First, not as many people will be showing up for service and there will be a lot of unused pews. A church’s upkeep is very expensive and is hard to validate paying when the space is hardly being used. Second, sure people are donating two dollars for a virtual candle but the Church is missing out on the valuable donations made upfront from passing baskets through the pews.
I don’t think churches will be negatively affected in our immediate future but we, Christian should definitely devise a plan so that we do not get crush financially from this new technology. Hopefully patrons will not be consumed by their laziness and will keep making it to service as we have done throughout the years.
