Which generation is dumber?

“The Dark Side” of Don Tapscott’s bestseller Grown up Digital explains the critics view points on how the net generation knows a significant less amount of information than the baby boomer generation. The net gens are a model of stupidity and ignorance. Attention deficit disorder, a fairly new diagnosed malfunction of the brain, has been rising among the younger people in our society due to all the revolutionary screen gadgets. Video games, television, computers and cell phones have created a self-centered, distracted mind in children and teens of today. Many people believe that technology will save us when it shall bring nothing but destruction to our minds and society. Social skills have been lost to Facebook and AIM. Body language will no longer exist. A regression in brain power and an increase of Ignorance will be shown through schooling and the SAT’s.

“The Dark Side” is a myth created by generation X to stop their greatest fear, their youth being upgraded and bypassing elders through technology. We are far more advanced with communication then people have ever been. Contacting a distant relative can be done in a matter of seconds with the internet as opposed to sending a hand written letter through the mail which can take a week. Some say we are uninformed but the reality is we, the net generation, are the leaders of the future and have far more access to any information we desire. When it comes to social skills we are advanced. Teenagers are constantly in contact with each other through texting, Facebook, and twitter. I believe the Who has the same view point as I about critics in their son “My Generation.”

Is memory a thing of the past?

With computers, cell phones, PDA's, IPod’s, and Blackberries able to store all the information we could ever need, will time bring a decrease in brain power for our future generations? Not to mention Google and the ability to look anything up in a fraction of a second. What is the point of learning and memorizing?

As society steadily becomes more and more reliant on these somewhat new sources of storage and information the human brain will devolve. People once had to rely on memory, phone books, file cabinets, and encyclopedias that required time and patience to find what one was looking for. Today we can find the same information in a matter of .33 seconds. The TI-89 calculator can do just about any math problem so what is the point of taking calculus and other math classes.

Will all types of class’s be taken over by technology classes? With the exception of learning technology schooling will become obsolete and college will be taken over by computer science engineering.
